Our History

1997

SMARTLINE LAUNCHES IN ACCRA, GHANA, WITH TWO EMPLOYEES.

From the cane dining table with one desktop computer, Smartline commenced formal operations in Coastal Estates. Our initial focus was on supplementary readers and children’s picture books. Some of our earlier books were the first editions of Champion Runner, Mr Bempong’s House, Jeneba becomes a Monkey, Bushy Tail, and our first non-fiction book Survivors on the Gold Coast, the Basel Missionaries in Colonial Ghana, which was first printed in Ghana.

2002

BSJSS PROJECT, OUR FIRST MAJOR PROJECT.

In its first attempt at something big, Smartline submitted its first books to the MoE for selection in the DFID/MoE Book Scheme for JHS Schools. A few of our local books were selected, together with other titles we submitted from Scholastic Incorporated. This was the first major breakthrough for the company and gave us the impetus to continue. With this, we embarked on the development of core textbooks for Primary and Junior High Schools in a number of core subjects.

2005

FCUBE TEXTBOOKS FOR BASIC SCHOOLS IN GHANA.

Smartline submitted a number of titles to the MoE when tenders were opened for Core Textbooks. Three of our textbooks were selected and procured by the MoE. These books: Primary Mathematics for Primary Schools, Agric Science for JSS and Technical Skills for JSS became the approved books supplied by the MOE for three regions in the country for a number of years. We continued with our publishing programme and expanded them into other genres.

2010

PARTNERS WITH WORLDREADER TO BRING DIGITAL / E-BOOKS TO UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN.

In 2010, we started generating our own E-Books and became one of the few publishers who embraced Worldreader when they embarked on their E-Books reading pilot projects in Adeiso and Kade. Our books simultaneously started featuring on the Amazon Kindle site.

2018

THE NEXT CHAPTER – “OUR REBIRTH”

After 20 years of operations, it is imperative that a company relooks at itself and engage in serious introspection. We are happy about many things, but we know we have shortcomings. There are areas we could have done better. We want to begin the writing of the next chapter of the Smartline Story.
